The last day of May

Can I tell you how much I look forward to this? I have been wanting to see them for eighteen years...!

Yesterday I went to the bar where Johan works to meet friends.

This telephone is still in use.

Johan at work.

This is Beatrice and me, do you recognize us? ;)

The first time I heard of Beatrice's work was about five years ago, when Camilla showed me her book Un lion a Paris, it's grand!

Thank you Beatrice & co for a lovely lovely evening!

Hello June! My plans for June are: work a lot, walk a lot & see New Order. What are yours?

  6. Hi! I was just wondering, and maybe you've talked about it here before, but are you and Johann fluent in German? I'm guessing you'd have to be, to live and work in Berlin? How long have you been studying German for and how easy or difficult have you found the language side of things? I'm interested in spending some time in certain places and Berlin is definitely one of them, but I suspect I'd have to take some lessons first (the five years of German I studied at high school is pretty much useless now and I can barely remember a thing). I'm just genuinely interested to hear how you've found that side of things, personally. :)

    1. Sian,
I speak German pretty well, but the problem here is that EVERYONE our age wants to speak English, so there is not much room for practising. I studied German 6 years at high school/college (it was my favourite subject) and then I took 1 year full-time at the university when I was 19 (I planned already then to move to Germany one day, don't know why really, hadn't been in Berlin at that time). I do well when I have to speak to authorities, but it's much easier to speak English with friends since people here are from all over the world. Of course it depends on what you work as, but in mine and Johan's professions the most common language is English. I would not want to live here if I wasn't able to communicate in German though, but that's me :) Good luck!

    2. Thank you! I moved to Sweden from the UK and my Swedish isn't as good as it could or should be, but I have a similar experience where as soon as people realise I'm English they instantly switch because they like to speak English anyway! It means I don't get as much practise as I could, sometimes! Communicating with authorities and dealing with the official side of things is definitely where the necessity for language comes in, I agree. If I do spend any time in Germany I will be sure to get some lessons beforehand! :)

    1. No I don't think so. Johan says it's hopeless to take pictures of me, this one shows it very well.

  10. Sandra, hope you have a lovely time at the New Order show! Alas, they only did one show, in Miami, in the US earlier this year--not practical for a New Yorker to attend. I've been fortunate enough to see many of my favorite bands live, but New Order remains at the tip-top of my wishlist.

My June priorities are: setting up a proper co-working space in my apartment, drinking vast quantities of cold-brewed coffee, writing short stories, and visiting museums. Perhaps in that order!

Hmmm for June I plan to: paint more, see Radiohead, bike more, take more photos, eat more ice cream, and try to drink less beer (ahahaa). ;P
