this metaphor comes to me via therapy-speak: where the purpose of peeling our own onions is to get to understand our selves better. Often to see where we protect ourselves to the point of not being able to self-actualize, or manifest our potential or desires. I guess that's part of the human potentiality movement, perhaps.
oh you have that bowl! we used to have brown one like that too, and some others same style. i just recently asked about them from my mother, and she had took them to the flea market.. oh well, so much stuff in our home anyway;)
